Continuing Education Through the Holidays

We are dedicated to providing students with the tools they need to help them learn and grow. While the kids are home from school for winter break, there are many ways they can enjoy their time off and continue learning. From books, educational games and family activities, here are a few ways you and your kids can spend the holidays learning and having fun.

  • Reading has many benefits and can be done anywhere. If you are on a roadtrip to visit family or need something for your kids to do while you’re prepping for the holidays, make sure to pack a book or two or download new books on your tablet. If your little ones get car sick, audiobooks are a great alternative! Remember to utilize your local Public Library for a wider range of books from which to choose. You can also get into the holiday spirit with holiday-themed books and once finished, treat your kids to the movie adaption of the book.
  • While you are baking those delicious holiday meals, kids can practice math skills in the kitchen by calculating measurements used in recipes. Showing them how to properly read and measure different ingredients is a fun, hands-on way to practice fractions, addition and subtraction. For your little ones, try counting the number of cookies left out for Santa or the number of sides a gingerbread house has.
  • Work on writing and penmanship skills by asking your kids to help write out thank-you notes to family and friends for the holidays. This is a great opportunity to work on spelling and grammar, while showing loved ones your gratitude.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year!

SA YES Joins Global #GivingTuesday Movement

SAYES_GivingTuesday_Blog Graphic

November is the month of giving thanks and giving back. As an organization dedicated to giving back to Title 1 Elementary students, we are always thrilled to take part in movements that help shine a light on nonprofits. #GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that takes place every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. While the Thanksgiving holiday is also known for shopping and getting deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday – #GivingTuesday shortly after is the day to give back. This day was created to raise awareness and funds for nonprofits that make a difference in their communities. As we enter the holiday season, we encourage you to get into the spirit of giving by supporting the students we serve.

If you would like to participate in #GivingTuesday, SA YES is a proud participating organization. Your donation to SA YES helps provide students with school supply kits containing the basic supplies they need to succeed during the academic school year. Also, with your donation, you will receive quarterly updates about our programs, invitations to our annual events, the opportunity to participate in our hands-on distribution of school supplies and recognition of your support.

Every act of generosity counts and each means even more when we give together. To participate in #GivingTuesday and give back to students in your city, you can donate directly to SA YES here.

2018 Drive Away for Education Truck Raffle Raises Over $77K

To supplement our efforts to provide free school supplies for Title 1 Elementary schools in San Antonio, SA YES is proud to announce this year’s Drive Away for Education Raffle raised a total of $77,517.42.

Each raffle ticket sold helped five local children start the school year off right with a school supply kit filled with colored pencils, crayons, an eraser, ruler, glue stick, notebook paper, pencils, pens, folders and a tissue box. Through the support and generosity of Ancira Auto Group, lucky winner Rich Henning drove away in a 2017 Titan Crew Cab SV 4×4.

The raffle proceeds will directly support the SA YES Back to Basics Project for the 2019-2020 school year.

We would like to thank all who participated in this year’s Drive Away for Education Truck Raffle and look forward to continuing our work and mission.

Congratulations to Rich Henning for being our 2018 Drive Away for Education Truck Raffle winner!

Rich received a 2017 Titan Crew Cab SV 4×4 thanks to the Ancira Auto Group.

Our annual Drive Away for Education Raffle took place in July with the purpose of supporting Central Texas Education. Proceeds from the raffle went towards providing students with free school supply kits to help them start the school year off right.

We are thrilled the raffle was such a success, and that our winner, Rich, is enjoying his new truck.

On Wednesday, August 21, SA YES made a special school supply distribution at Palo Alto Elementary school. We were honored to be joined by members of the Thomas J. Henry Family including Maya Henry, Azteca Henry and Teresa Crawford as well as celebrity recording artist and San Antonio native, Austin Mahone who helped distribute school supplies to the school’s students.

With the support of Thomas J Henry and family, along with other local sponsors, we provided school supply kits which included pencils, notebook paper, crayons, a ruler and other school supplies. After receiving their school supplies, Palo Alto students enjoyed a private surprise acoustic performance by Mahone who performed two songs. The show was a hit!

For the 2018 school year, SA YES will provide 27,000 local kindergarten through fifth-grade students with free school supplies through the Back to Basics Project, preparing them to start the school year off right. The Back to Basics Project is made possible through the gracious partnership of local sponsors, Thomas J. Henry, Methodist Healthcare, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Fiesta Texas, Ancira Auto Group, Sinclair Broadcast Group and IHOP.

Again, a big thank you to the Thomas J. Henry Family and Austin Mahone for joining us in giving back!

Another Successful Taste of Education Dinner and SA YES Golf Classic

The money raised has already been put to good use to provide school supply kits to local students through our Back to Basics Project.  With continued sponsorships and donations, we have been able to provide elementary students with the basic school supplies they need to start the year off right.

We would like to thank Thomas J. Henry, Ancira Auto Group and Methodist Healthcare for our Title and Presenting sponsors for the 2018 Taste of Education Dinner and SA YES Golf Classic. SA YES looks forward to continuing their mission to make a difference in the lives of San Antonio’s youth.

SA YES Gets a New Digital and PR Agency

We are excited to announce a new working relationship with Noisy Trumpet, a local digital and public relations agency. The Noisy Trumpet team will help refresh and maintain our website and social media accounts and provide assistance for our public relations needs for our key fundraising events including the Annual Golf Classic and Taste of Education Dinner.

As a non-profit, we are thrilled to work with an agency with experience in helping nonprofits engage with their communities. Our Back to Basics Project is important to prepare the students we support with the basic school supplies they need to start the year off right. Our new partnership with the Noisy Trumpet team is set out to establish a closer and more connected relationship with the local school districts, elementary schools, and, most importantly, the students we support.

Together, we look forward to each new school year and to providing local elementary students with the tools they need to succeed.

Whew! What an amazing outpour of support during the first week of school.  Each year, we at SA YES, along with our Board members and numerous volunteers, pack, unpack, dress up and distribute supplies over all the city of San Antonio to elementary schools.

At the start of the week, we were set to distribute to 37 elementary schools within four school districts and by the end of the week, we were able to provide 40 elementary schools with free school supplies for 23,000 students.

I would like to thank all of our donors and sponsors from our annual SA YES Golf Classic and Taste of Education for making this possible for us. I would like to give special recognition to Thomas J Henry, The Henry Family, Methodist Healthcare, Santikos Entertainment and Schlitterbahn Waterparks for helping sponsor the school supply kits.

All of this success would not be possible without all of the companies and organizations that sent their employees to help, including but not limited to, Quarter Moon Productions, Accenture, The Watermark Group, NuStar Energy, Marathon Oil, Robert Half, H-E-B, Target (San Pedro), The Bank of San Antonio, US Navy, Career Point College, Macy’s (La Cantera) and The PM Group.

SA YES is proud to partner with Maya’s Corner & My Kid’s Polo

SA YES is excited to announce our recent partnership with Maya’s Corner and My Kid’s Polo to help distribute school uniforms to San Antonio students in need.  Starting in August 2016, SA YES will partner with Edgewood ISD middle schools to help distribute over 500 school uniforms to students at selected schools.

My Kid’s Polo was founded with the belief that all kiddos should have the chance to wear clothes that reflect who they are, reflect their individuality.  For every icon shirt that is bought, one shirt will be donated to at-risk youth in San Antonio.  This movement is known as #icons4icons

Maya’s Corner was founded in 2011 to raise awareness and funds for causes close to the heart of founder, Maya Henry. The organization has worked with numerous groups over the years to positively impact the lives of children, families, and animals.  Maya’s Corner has been involved with school supply distribution with SA YES.

We will continue to update our social media with more exciting news as we increase this opportunity to additional schools.

Maya Henry Chooses SA YES

Recently SA YES received a little limelight when Maya Henry, daughter of Azteca and Thomas J. Henry, celebrated her Quinceañera in February. Besides what some have called the “best party San Antonio has ever seen” there was a philanthropic effort present as well.

SA YES was selected as one of two charities that Maya Henry asked that donations be made to in lieu of gifts for her special birthday celebration.  In just a few short weeks, $5,000 in donations were made by party guests in Maya’s name to support the efforts of SA YES.

Maya and the entire Henry family are strong supporters of SA YES. In 2015, Azteca and Thomas J. Henry sponsored two of the organization’s biggest fundraisers; the SA YES Golf Classic and the SA YES Taste of Education Dinner. In August, Maya and her mother helped the organization distribute school supplies to at-risk children throughout the San Antonio area.

We are incredibility grateful for her support and thinking of us.

Check out SA YES featured in the following websites thanks to Miss Henry.
